Under Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, it is perfectly legal to refuse to hire, promote, or fire someone because they are LGBT.

The lack of LGBT protection in the Act means it also legal to deny LGBT people rental housing or to refuse to serve them in stores, restaurants, and other public spaces.

As a Representative in the Michigan House, I will fully support amending the Elliott-Larsen Act and Michigan's Ethnic Intimidation Act to include sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

All Michigan Democrats should be fighting to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the equal protection and non-discrimination provisions of Article I, Section 2 of the Michigan Constitution.
